Cantamus Finals Week

Tomorrow at the awards dessert I’d like to recognize all students who were in Cantamus this year, and especially students who have been in Cantamus for more than just one year. If that includes you, would you please email me before tomorrow afternoon and let me know how many and which years you have sung in Cantamus?

Bumble Bee rehearsals will be tomorrow 12:25-12:40 in Zelman and then again following the senior rehearsal on Tuesday.  The time for our rehearsal on Tuesday will be 1:00-2:00 in the Zelman Center.  Anyone who has not had lunch is welcome to join me at Sweet Tomatoes following our 1:00 rehearsal.

I would like to form our new Cantamus Student Advisory Council this week.  Our first meeting will be Wednesday, 12:25 – 1:00 in Room 302.  If you served on the Council this school year, please come to help welcome and orient the new council.  If you’d like to serve on the Council next year, please let me know.  I love having student input into decisions that affect our whole choir.

See you tomorrow!

Last-Minute Concert for Review

If you are in 7th or 8th grade and still need one more concert to review, check this out:

La Forza Chamber Orchestra

While the concert follows the due date of the concert review (both concert reviews are due Friday, May 20, 3pm), you could still turn in your review one school day late and suffer a slight consequence rather than not turn it in at all and get a zero on the review!

Further, this seems to be a free concert!

Thanks to Mr. Bergez and Victoria for finding this concert for us.  Procrastinators, take note!

If you still need a concert to review, there’s a link to an acceptable one atIf

Tuesday Morning Rehearsal

Cantamus, I will offer you a convenient way to return your folders and music scores, as well as your Fiddler books, for which you will be charged if you don’t return them: come to the Zelman Center tomorrow (Tuesday, May 17) between 7am and 8am and remove the music and stack the folders on the table prepared for you.  This will save Mrs. Wolfe from having to track you down later, and from you or your parents paying late fees and replacement costs for the music.

I’d like to rehearse with all of the members of Cantamus who want to perfect “Bumble Bee” at 7:30 tomorrow.  If you want to sing this piece, please come a few minutes before 7:30 so you can take care of your folder music.  You will return everything except “Bumble Bee” and your folder.  We have an opportunity to perform this at the Awards Assembly on Friday, May 27.  It would be a welcome addition to the program, which promises to be much shorter this year than ever before.  I’d love to have you perform if you can perfect and feel good about your presentation.  So we’ll work for 30 minutes tomorrow and then maybe schedule lunch rehearsals to finish it.

Tomorrow, there also will be order forms so you can order your copy of the Disney DVD (note: the Disney DVD is for private, home viewing only; posting on the Internet in any form is illegal and punishable by law), the concert DVD, and an 8X10 of the Disney photo.

I love you students!  You are wonderful, and your parents are pretty great, too!

Awards Dessert

Cantamus Singers and Parents!

It has been a wonderful year and we are almost ready to breathe a sigh of relief and joy at our accomplishments.  Almost, but not quite.

I’d like to honor you in Cantamus, along with others in the extracurricular performing arts, at a dessert and short ceremony on Monday, May 23 (one week from tonight) at TPA.  The desserts, I expect, will be set up in the breezeway and the ceremony will be in the famous Zelman Center.  I hope to have some slide shows and also our vocal workshop DVD at the ceremony so all can see.  Parents and siblings are invited.

The dessert will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the ceremony shortly thereafter.  Please RSVP by email to me so we can have enough goodies for everyone.  There is no cost for this event.

I’m also inviting members of the Fiddler cast, TPA Winds, Varsity Strings, Junior High Choir, Junior High Drama Workshop, and Junior Varsity Strings, so your RSVP is important.

Cantamus, Varsity Strings Concert: “Bravo!”

Outstanding performance last night!  The Varsity Strings were strong and vibrant, with works of Bach and Mozart, and a show-stopper work of Paganini performed by Thomas Menefee, contrabass.

Cantamus brought a smile to the faces in the audience and perhaps a tear to the eye with their 13 pieces, beginning with a powerful “Star-Spangled Banner,” the beautiful “Windflowers” by Richard Ewer, works of Brahms, Billings, Rutter, and Hayes.  Not to mention the transcendent, “Sure on this Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen.

Jenn Stephens, Sales Manager for USA Today and Sports Weekly, and graduate of the School for Creative and Performing Arts in San Diego had this to say: “I was extremely impressed with your student talent pool …  Bravo, well done!”

We hope to make DVDs of the concert available to the performers and their families.  Check back in the next couple of days for details.

Cantamus Concert Week!

Congratulations to every singer and actor in Fiddler on the Roof! What a wonderful show!  Every comment I’ve heard from audience members has been glowingly positive: one of the best things TPA has ever produced.

Our run-through rehearsal is Monday afternoon 3-4:30.  We’ll dismiss our track athletes in time for them to get to their practice.

Monday lunch (12:25-12:40) is Cantamus Jazz rehearsal.  Tuesday and Wednesday noon rehearsals TBA.

Tuesday morning’s rehearsal will be our final regular rehearsal before the big concert Wednesday evening.

Cast Call Wednesday evening is 6:00 p.m. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m.

Cantamus Rehearsals This Week

What a busy week!  The trip to the Disney Advanced Vocal Workshop was wonderful!  And Fiddler opens Wednesday!  Wow!

Next week, May 11, is our big concert with Varsity Strings: 15 songs is our goal!

Here’s the schedule of rehearsals for this week.  Please be punctual, since it is impossible to build an ensemble without every member present.  Also, please be flexible; some of the rehearsals may need to be rescheduled because of a need for Fiddler rehearsals.  Rehearsals will be in the Zelman Center, unless preempted by Fiddler rehearsals, or unless the piano is unavailable.  The alternate lunchtime rehearsal room is 405.

Tuesday, May 3
7am-8am – regular rehearsal; all-choir, with Mrs. Looker for “Sieh’ wie ist” and “Sure on this Shining”
12:25-12:40 Jazz

Wednesday, May 4
12:25-12:40 Camerata with Mrs. Looker, accompanist; “Nein…”

Thursday, May 5
12:25-12:40 – Jazz (note: no 7am rehearsal on this day)

Friday, May 6
12:25-12:40 – Camerata with Mrs. Looker, accompanist; “Nein…”

Monday, May 9
3:00-4:30 p.m. – Dress rehearsal all-choir, run through of all pieces; Mrs. Looker; Camerata, Jazz, Men in Black, Women of Cantamus

Note: the May 9 rehearsal conflicts with the first half hour of track practice.  Singers who also are track athletes are excused from the first 45 minutes of practice, as long as they arrive at McClintock High School warmed up and ready to work. If you are in track, please feel free to come to rehearsal in your track uniform.
