Only 3 Rehearsals until Performance!

Cantamus singers: only three more regular rehearsals and then we perform our beautiful program.  Let’s have all hands on deck, no excuses for these last three rehearsals:

  • Tuesday, April 30, 7am
  • Thursday, May 2, 7am
  • Tuesday, May 7, 7am (this is the day of the performance)

The performance is Tuesday evening, May 7 at 7pm at Grace Community Church’s Davidson Center (where we performed “On Broadway”).  Cast call is 6pm.

Early Plans for Cantamus Pary Next Year

Here is a possible event for Cantamus, 2013-2014:

Cantamus Workshop and Pool Party

Possible date: August 10, 2013, 9am – 4pm

Likely agenda:

  • Parent orientation session
  • Performing arts opportunities for students — including Junior High Choir and Spring Musical)
  • Recruiting parents for the fund-raiser event scheduled to occur on November 2, 2013
  • Uniform information
  • Attendance and participation policy
  • Calendar for Cantamus
  • Sight reading workshop
  • Singing some of the repertoire for the year
  • Concluding with a pool party and barbecue or potluck (off-campus, obviously, unless Lake Brittain has been created by a deluge!)

The workshop and party is intended at this time for auditioned members of Cantamus.

I’d appreciate your thoughts and feedback!

It’s Concert Review Time!

Many of my students have been reporting great experiences hearing concerts for their required concert review. Others and their parents have been contacting me for approval to review concerts they think would be fun to hear.  In many cases, this is unnecessary because the concert may already have been pre-approved.

  • Find a list of pre-approved concerts suitable for review here.
  • Remember, performers must be at college level or above.
  • Concerts must be live, “classical” (by which I mean “art music) or above.
  • Musical theater pieces (such as The Music Man and Hairspray) pop, and jazz concerts are not acceptable.
  • Opera is acceptable.
  • A symphony concert usually is acceptable unless it is a “pops,” jazz, or folk music concert.

The concert review form that students use to report their concert-going experience is near the same location, here.

Cantamus Schedule and News

Next week is production week for The Sound of Music, so there will be no rehearsals for Cantamus.

In the meantime, listen to some recordings of Randall Thompson’s transcendent “Alleluia.”  Go to Cantamus Downloads and click on some of the suggested recordings.

Sound of Music Tickets Still Available!

Although they are selling fast, tickets to TPA’s presentation of The Sound of Music are still available.  Purchase online by clicking here or go to the link “TPA Links” tab above and clicking on “TPA Performing Arts.”

Seniors: Commencement Music!

The time is right to start the process of choosing commencement music!  I’d like to invite your participation if you’re interested.

Please join me after sixth period on Friday, April 19, 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. in the Zelman Center for our first discussion.

Over the years, I’ve put together a policy for commencement music that seems to work fairly well.  Please view it here.

See you then!

Cantamus Parent Council Tuesday

The Cantamus Parent Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday, April 16, from 7-8pm in Room 302.  We will review the year and discuss next year’s plans.

If you are a parent of a Cantamus singer and would like to participate in this meeting, please come!

Recorder Concert Last-Minute Info

The recorder concert is Thursday evening, April 4, so here are some last-minute items.

We still need two parent monitors, one for 8a and one for 8c. If your student is in one of these sections, please consider helping us in this way. Parent monitors basically watch the students and help them to be where they are supposed to be from cast call to the end of the concert. Monitors are able to hear the entire concert. If you are interested in helping, please reply to this email. Parent monitors need to be at EdOptions High School at about 5:15 for the minimal training required.

Cast call: 5:30. All students in the performance are to be at EdOptions at 5:30.

Athletes: 7th and 8th grade athletes will have a busy afternoon on Thursday. The Girls Basketball Team 2, Boys Junior High Baseball, and Girls Junior High Basketball Team 1 are all scheduled to play games. Students on these teams will be allowed to come late to cast call without penalty providing they have a written note from their coaches confirming that they are on the team and were at the game. Mrs. Wilkison and I still expect our athletes to make every effort to be at EdOptions as close to 5:30 as possible.

Concert attire: Concert attire is required of all 7th and 8th grade students.

  • BOYS: Black pants (no denim), white dress shirts, black shoes, black socks, and dark-colored ties.
  • GIRLS: Black dress slacks and black socks or black skirt with black hose, white blouses with sleeves, and black shoes. No denim! Skirts must be knee-length or longer.

Families who have difficulty obtaining this attire for their students, please contact Dr. Wolfe immediately.

Bus permission form: the 7th and 8th grade students are dismissed from their fourth and fifth period classes on Thursday to participate in the tech rehearsal for the concert. (This is when we organize the movement of 133 junior students on and off stage, figure out where they stand and sit, and so on.) TPA is providing bus transportation and therefore needs the parents’ written permission for their students to ride the bus. The form is available here .

The students seem excited to perform for you, and I’m sure you’re eager to hear them. I look forward to Thursday evening!
