The date of the Fall Concert for all 10th and 11th grade students is changed to Thursday, December 5. Here is a brief explanation for the change.
Last May when the directors set the calendar dates, we selected December 5 for the concert. Then, during the summer, the interscholastic association set a number of athletic events for that evening. Because we wish to encourage our students to participate in extracurricular activities, we changed the date of the concert for the following evening. Unfortunately, December 6 conflicts with Speech and Debate’s Winter Trophy, the most important event of the fall semester. So our solution was not fully satisfactory.
This month, after the beginning of school, our athletic director was able to negotiate a change in the date for our athletic events, so we were able to move the concert back to December 5.
Our philosophy at TPA is to make it possible for students to participate in performing arts, in athletics, in speech and debate, and any other extracurricular activities that they desire. We are a small enough school that the department heads can work together to avoid many of the conflicts that would simply remain in larger organizations. Of course, conflicts still arise and students then must make choices. Our desire, though, is to provide every opportunity we can for our students’ growth and experiences.

These amazing young voices scored a hit with “Pie Jesu,” arranged by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I remember young people screaming like this when the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan show back in 1964. I think our young people today show much more discrimination! Enjoy!
If you are interested in receiving individual instruction for your voice, you may want to contact Cassandra Cárdenas, mezzo soprano. She contacted me about her new studio, looking for committed students. Her impressive credentials include the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, ASU, and Arizona Opera Chorus.
