Cantilena’s Messiah

You can hear Handel’s Messiah on

  • Fri Dec 6 – Dayspring United Methodist, Tempe – 7:30 pm concert
  • Sat Dec 7 – Church of the Master, Mesa – 4:00 pm concert

The performers are Cantilena. Find out more about this fine group here. Former director of Cantamus and Bel Canto, Marlynn Rey, sings with this chorale.

If you’d like to hear Messiah performed by a really fine choir, mark your calendar. Note: you’ll need to make prior arrangements with me to review one of these performances since they fall after the due date for the concert reviews. With prior arrangements there will be no late penalty.

Combined concert repertoire posted

The three pieces performed by the combined 10th and 11th grade choirs are posted. They are:

  • “Lacrimosa” for combined 10th and 11th grade choirs
  • “Johnny Said No” for combined 10th and 11th grade girls
  • “Erlkönig” for combined 10th and 11th grade boys

Recordings of the the three pieces are found on the “Music Class Downloads” page.

In addition to these three pieces, the combined choirs are scheduled to perform “Non Nobis” and “Guadeamus igitur.”

Concerts acceptable for review posted

The list of concerts that qualify for review is posted as part of the concert review agreement (on Jupiter) and here on my blog.

Both reviews are due December 6, 3pm and can be submitted any time before that for full credit. Reviews count in the second quarter and semester grade for the class.

Special note: I included The Light in the Piazza, produced at ASU. For a synopsis of the opera, please see here .

Happy listening!

Welcome and some concerts for review

Welcome to a new school year at TPA! Now that we’re in the rhythm of class meetings, homework assignments, quizzes and tests, I’m certainly enjoying working with my Juniors in music class.

Already Ms. Catherine Hayden, President of Hayden’s Ferry Chamber Music Series, has contacted me with information about their wonderful series. When we hear one of these concerts in the museum at the Tempe Center for the Arts, we sit just a few feet from these amazing, world-class performers.

A reception follows each concert where everyone can meet the artists. Students pay $10 and an accompanying adult ticket price is $22.50 (normally $30) using the code “charterschool”.

Every concert in the Hayden’s Ferry Chamber Music Series is approved for concert review for TPA music classes.
