Music participation and academics–more research

Students who participate in music in elementary through high school do better academically than those who don’t, a new, large-scale study finds, as reported in Psychology Today.

Students who learned to play a musical instrument in elementary and continued playing in high school not only score significantly higher but were about one academic year ahead of their non-music peers with regard to their English, mathematics and science skills

This recent study adds to a significant body of research showing that students benefit academically from their music studies, such as we have at Tempe Preparatory Academy. I ran a series of blog articles about the benefits of music instruction for students. Music also is a therapeutic prescription.
